Digital Custodian Altruist Takes On Schwab, Fidelity With New RIA Model

Griffin Kelly at Daily Upside covered Altruist's new affiliate model, in which the digital custodian takes on compliance, regulatory filings, payroll, cybersecurity and back-office work for advisers who join under its RIA, a challenge to Schwab and Fidelity aimed at breakaway advisers. He asked whether it will land.

It will, with a specific group. I see this constantly with advisers in their 30s who want to go out on their own but cannot justify the overhead. Building a compliant independent firm from scratch means a chief compliance officer or a consultant, a tech stack, E&O insurance, an ADV, a cyber program and a dozen vendor contracts before the first client signs. For an adviser with a $30 million book, that math is brutal. An affiliate platform that bundles all of it for a share of revenue removes the barrier.

The downside is the part I flagged: you are building on someone else's platform. If Altruist's priorities shift, yours shift with them. Pricing changes, technology decisions, which products are approved, what the compliance manual allows. All of it belongs to the platform, and the adviser who has built a practice on it has limited leverage to push back. Independence with a landlord is still a lease.

For a young adviser it can be the right first step. The thing to negotiate up front is the exit: what it takes to leave, what you take with you and what it costs.
