Why a Federal Reserve rate hike could be a ‘rare win’ for your retirement money

Jessica Hall at MarketWatch asked me what a Federal Reserve rate hike actually means for people living on savings instead of a paycheck. My answer was that higher rates are a rare win for retirees, with one big exception.

The positive side is real. CDs, money market funds and high-yield savings accounts all move up with the Fed. For someone drawing on a fixed income, the extra yield on a CD ladder is real, spendable money, and retirees who built cash reserves finally get paid something for holding safe assets.

The exception is credit card debt. Most cards carry variable rates tied to prime, so the same hike that helps a CD punishes anyone carrying a balance. Nearly half of Americans 50 and older carry card debt month to month, often to cover a medical bill or a grandkid's tuition gap. If they are only making minimum payments, a rate increase can turn a manageable balance into a much bigger problem within a year.

Two mistakes I told MarketWatch to avoid: locking into long-term CDs the moment rates rise, thinking you caught the top, and ignoring a card balance because "it's just the minimum." The math on variable-rate debt moves against seniors faster than most people expect.
