Sports betting to build wealth is becoming the new American dream

Beth Pinsker at MarketWatch reported on a survey showing 15% of Gen Z investors are using sports betting to accelerate financial goals like down payments and student loans. She asked me where the line sits between budgeted entertainment and a real problem.

More of my clients are treating sports betting as a budget line item instead of a Vegas weekend, and I do not fight that on its own. One client sets aside 10% of income for it, mostly sports betting with some table games. It is capped, it is budgeted, and it never touches retirement contributions or emergency savings. That is discipline.

What I watch for is whether the number moves. Ten percent that stays 10% is a budget. Ten percent that creeps to 15% after a bad month chasing losses is a different conversation, and I have had that conversation more than once.

The tell I look for is where the winnings go. Winnings that get swept into a brokerage account belong to someone who understands the difference between a bet and a position. The bigger risk is when a client starts mentally counting gambling wins as part of a net worth trajectory and anchors retirement timing to a good streak. Sweep it, do not stake it.
